Dexter- Remains to Be Seen

The stresses of concussions and lost bodies

By Melissa Girimonte

This review may contain spoilers.

Dexters sleep deprivation has become even more of a problem when he falls asleep at the wheel and crashes his vehicle. He wakes up to find emergency workers extracting him from the wreckage, then remembers that he was on his way to dispose of Benny Gomez, and the body is still in the car. Completely helpless, hes loaded into an ambulance, his SUV and Gomezs remains being left at the scene.

Dexter is diagnosed with a concussion, and in a cruel turn of events, is advised not to sleep for 12 hours. Against doctors orders, Dexter leaves the hospital when Rita arrives, downplaying the severity of his injury. He has only one thing on his mind -- finding and disposing of Benny Gomezs body. When he should be resting, Dexter heads straight to work.

Dexter finally reaches whats left of his vehicle only to find his tools, but no sign of the body. The search is on, but Dexter has no clue where to look next. Thats when Harry appears to help Dexter retrace his steps. His next stop is the scene of the accident, if he can ever lose Lundy, who is still hanging around Miami Metro turf trying to get in on what he thinks is an investigation into the Trinity Killer. Lundy says that the investigation bringing him to Miami is kismet, so he can have Dexter and Debra Morgan on the case.

There is definitely friction between Deb and her former lover, Lundy. Deb is certain hes returned to Miami for her, and she confronts him when he asks her to dinner. After all, he left Miami following the Bay Harbour Butcher case, and never called her again. She says shes moved on, and is happy with her new man, Anton. Lundy lets her know that his motives are to track The Trinity Killer, and Deb is lead on the case. He reveals that he believes it is a national case, and shares details from other cities where the exact events have taken place. Deb leaves, a bit embarrassed, and heads home to Anton.

Tension has surfaced between Angel and Laguerta at work. Under pressure from the mayors office, she removes Angel as lead on the Vacation Murder case, and puts herself in charge. Angel, of course, takes it personally, thinking that shes being overly cautious that the chain of command doesnt come into question if their relationship is discovered. Laguerta also scolds Quinn for leaking information on the case to his journalist gal pal Christine Hill.

Dexters about to revisit the scene of his accident, but theres been another Vacation Murder which sidetracks him briefly. By some stroke of luck, even though Dexter is concussed, exhausted and distracted, he discovers a potential suspect based on blood left at the scene. This buys him some time to check out a few more spots for the missing remains. The accident site is a bust, theres no sign of Gomez at the boxing gym, and the pharmacy where Dexter stopped to pick up Harrisons prescription doesnt jog his memory.

Rita shows up at Dexters work to confront him about lying to her about the severity of his car accident. Shes been to see the SUV, and knows it wasnt just a fender bender. She blames his job for his lack of sleep, and is about to confront Laguerta when Dexter persuades her not to.

While Miami Metro is preoccupied with the Vacation Murders, Trinity is out there looking for his next victim.

Dexter makes another visit to the scene of the crime, and discovers Benny Gomezs remains were in the punching bag at the boxing gym the entire time. He disposes of the remains, and once again, hes gotten away with murder.

After a trying day, Dexter finally closes his eyes, just in time for Harrison to start crying.

Even though everything works out for Dexter by the end of this episode, how much longer will he be able to maintain his charade with three equally demanding aspects of his life?

What Worked

The tension and anxiety caused by Dexter not being able to find the body was superb. Even though I figured he wouldnt be caught, the potential that his life could all come crashing down made for great TV.

It was a nice touch having Harry be such an important part of Dexter trying to remember where the body could be. They always do a great job blurring the line between fantasy and reality. Dexter and Harrys conversation following the dramatic events of the day was a great scene. Dexter needs to evaluate his priorities -- family, work and his Dark Passenger -- if he wants to remain a free man.

Rita has started to question everything, and no longer takes what her husband says at face value. Her lack of trust adds an intense dynamic to the marriage, and to the show in general.

What Didnt Work

This is just me nitpicking, but there could have been a little more Trinity in this episode.
