Connie Britton Faces 'Elm Street' Fears

Actress plays Marge Thompson, who helped fry Fred Krueger

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" actress Connie Britton recently revealed her initial unease about taking on a horror genre project during an interview with the NY Post.

Britton ("Friday Night Lights") plays Marge Thompson, a member of a group of disgruntled parents who corners suspected child killer Fred Krueger and burns him to death. She takes on a role originally played by Ronee Blakley ("Nashville") in the classic 1984 Wes Craven film.

But Britton had not seen Craven's film, partly to give herself a fresh take on the character, and partly because she is a self-described "scaredy cat."

"I've known Rob Zombie for a long time and he's always been telling me, 'Connie, you gotta make a horror movie!'" Britton explained. "But I was still too chicken. But when I heard Jackie Earle Haley was doing Freddy, I thought that this was the time. But in retrospect, now that I've seen a good part of the original, it made no difference because what we do in the new one is so substantially different."

According to the NY Post, Robert Englund pointed to Britton's casting as one of his favorite elements of the reboot because she can elevate the classic role.

"That was kind of my hope too," Britton said. "I'm not sure it we accomplished that though. The truth is, I don't think the role is as well represented in the movie as it could have been. My sense is that the focus won't be on my character as much as I previously thought, but we'll see."

"Nightmare On Elm Street" is helmed by first-time director Bayer, and is based on a script by Eric Heisserer and Wesley Strick ("Wolf," "Cape Fear").

The film hits theaters April 30, 2010, and also stars Kyle Gallner (Jennifer's Body"), Rooney Mara (Urband Legends: Bloody Mary"), Thomas Dekker ("Laid To Rest", "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles"), Kellan Lutz ("The Twilight Saga: New Moon), Katie Cassidy ("Taken," "Supernatural") and Clancy Brown ("Carnivàle," "The Burrowers").
