Comic-Con Briefs: Robert Englund Talks 'Elm Street' Remake

PLUS: New 'Elm Street' footage; True Blood drink hits stores; Clive Barker wraps third Abarat'

Robert Englund, the actor behind the iconic horror villain Freddy Krueger, says he was not surprised to see his role go to another actor in the upcoming Nightmare On Elm Street remake.

Ive made peace with it, Englund said Friday while promoting the webisode series FEAR Clinic at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

Remakes are simply part of the fabric of Hollywood, and many films throughout history have gone that route, he explained.

In fact, Englund is curious to see how the dream sequences may benefit from todays technology, something he wished the original 1984 A Nightmare On Elm Street would have had.

The cast for the remake is particularly impressive to Englund. And the new Krueger, Jackie Earle Haley, is an actor he deeply respects. I think that his energy and size .. really lend themselves to Freddy, Englund said.

The Nightmare On Elm Street remake is scheduled to hit theaters April 30, 2010.

Elm Streetreboot footage shown at Comic-Con: Several minutes of footage from the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street reboot was show to an audience attending the Warner Brothers' panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, Friday.

Producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, along with director Samuel Bayer, hosted the presentation.

The first clip featured Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley) before his death, fleeing from a group of vengeful parents. He takes shelter in a dilapidated factory, fortifying himself inside as firebombs begin striking the building. As he pulls off his jacket to reveal an all-too-familiar sweater, the building explodes.

Another scene spotlights Freddy coming to life. Many images evoke classic scenes from the original 1984 film, including a girl prowling a high school in a plastic body bag and a boyfriend attempting to wake his girlfriend up, only to see her rise into the air and strike the ceiling.

Freddy is largely kept to the shadows, though his glove is featured prominently.

As the footage concludes, Freddy says, "Ready or not, here I come."

Nightmare on Elm Street opens in theaters April 30, 2010.

Clive Barker wraps third Abarat book: Clive Barker has completed Absolute Midnight, the third book of his young-adult Abarat fantasy series.

Barker spoke at the panel for the webisode series FEAR Clinic at Comic-Con International, Friday.

He briefly expressed his hopes for a feature film adaption of Jericho, a horror-themed video game he penned, and then revealed that Absolute Midnight was already at the publisher.

The largest book of the series to date, Absolute Midnight will plunge readers into a much darker experience than the previous novels, according to Barker.

In fact, Barker surprised himself by how grim the material became.

I would love it if kids were introduced to horror through the Abaratbooks, Barker said. It (Absolute Midnight) gets as dark as it is going to get.

The book continues the story of Candy Quakenbush, a young girl forced to navigate the countless mysteries of the magical islands of Abarat. She seeks to understand her place in a dimension of impossible realities, where the dreaded Lord of Midnight plans his final conquest.

No release date has been announced.

Get your bottle of True Blood: The artificial blood drink made famous in HBOs hit vampire series True Blood is coming to a store near you.

Executive Producer Alan Ball made the announcement Saturday during Comic-Con International.

However, dont expect an actual plasma boost. Though this drink will mirror the prop from the show on the outside, itll actually contain a tasty blood-orange soda with all-natural ingredients.

True Blood will be available Sept. 10.
