IFC Films To Release 'Antichrist'
Lars Von Trier picture stirs considerable controversy at Cannes
IFC Films will distribute Lars Von Trier's "Antichrist," a highly divisive psychological horror flick which premiered at the 62nd Annual Cannes Film Festival this week.
The film follows a couple recovering from the death of their son. They journey to their cabin in the woods for therapy, but soon suffer a mind-bending slide into madness.
Starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, "Antichrist" was produced by Meta Louise Foldager and executive produced by Peter Garde and Peter Aalbaek Jensen. Oscar-winner Anthony Dod Mantle served as cinematographer.
Though the film was met with passionate cheers and jeers at Cannes, it's enjoying a surprising surge of publicity and interest. Part of the buzz extends from its explicit treatment of violence, sex and bleakness.
"Since it premiered at Cannes on Monday, we haven't been able to stop
talking or thinking about 'Antichrist,'" said Jonathan Sehring, IFC Entertainment president.
"Antichrist" will make its U.S. debut, uncensored and fully intact, via IFC's day-and-date platform, which simultaneously releases films theatrically and on video-on-demand.
This is the third Von Trier picture release by IFC, following "The Boss Of It All" and "Manderlay."
Von Trier is unfazed by the swelling controversy at Cannes.
"I can offer no excuse for 'Antichrist' ... other than my absolute belief in the film - the most important film of my entire career!" he said.
