'The Cabin In The Woods' Promises A Wild Ride
Co-writer Joss Whedon offers insights on the upcoming film's progress
"The Cabin In The Woods" producer and co-writer Joss Whedon is elated with the upcoming horror film's progress, but indicated it was a wild ride getting there.
The genre-bending film is directed by "Cloverfield" writer Drew Goddard, who has held producing and writing credits on "Lost," "Alias," "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Angel." He co-wrote "The Cabin In The Woods," which marks his directorial debut.
"I think it's going to be gorgeous," Whedon said during the Paley Fest panel in Hollywood, Tuesday. "I think it's going to be quite a movie, but it's also a little out of control. We're not quite halfway through filming, and it's utter chaos, but mostly the good kind. Apparently, as producer, I'm the guy who's supposed to be controlling it, so I have to figure out how to do that."
Naturally, Whedon's notorious humor surfaced here, forcing a clarification. "Oh, no, it's just the usual," he explained. "It's just the usual stuff. When you're almost halfway through, you feel like you'll never be done, but the stuff we've got is so dynamite. I'm pretty excited about it. Drew's kicking it out."
Details on the film's top-secret plot remain slim, with Whedon declining to offer significant hints.
"It is not just a slasher in the woods," he said. "It's a little more complicated than that."
Part of the film's complication likely involves the heavy emphasis on the script's characters and on casting them. Whedon said in a past interview that assembling the actors has been very hard and very rewarding, [...] Each of the kidsis unique, fascinating and talented, and like true friends, the group is more than the sum of its parts. These are people you care about, able to go toe to toe with the amazing actors weve corralled thus far, and not unpretty in the bargain. I cant wait to harm them.
"The Cabin In The Woods" hits theaters Feb. 5, 2010.
