Director Wes Craven's 1972 cult classic "The Last House on the Left" served as the springboard for a remarkable career in horror filmmaking. On March 13, an update to the controversial film hits theaters courtesy of Rogue Pictures. It joins two other Craven classics to receive reboots, "The Hills Have Eyes" and "A Nightmare On Elm Street." The original "The Last House on the Left" launched on a shoestring budget, and presented audiences with a sadistic tale of vengeance. After kidnapping, raping and murdering two teenagers, a band of thugs unknowingly takes refuge with the parents of one of their victims. The parents soon learn of the group's actions and exact a grisly revenge. Though some critics insisted the original film was exploitative nonsense, other critics found it exhibited a startlingly artistic look at violence. Regardless, censorship problems surfaced in many countries, including a ban in Australia and the United Kingdom. “I’m far enough removed from these films that the remakes are a little like having grandchildren,” Craven said during an interview with Variety. “The story, about the painful side effects of revenge, is an evergreen. The headlines are full of people and nations taking revenge and getting caught up in endless cycles of violence.” The remake is helmed by Greek director Dennis Iliadis, whose gritty and controversial 2004 film "Hardcore" landed him in Craven's former chair. “I want this to be a film that grabs you and never lets you go,” Iliadis said. “At the same time, it should make us think a bit about human nature. Who is civilized, who is uncivilized? Who is violent, who is normal? Our film grabs you by the throat and tells us some things about human nature. We are an interesting species.” More details on the film are compiled at a special microsite, WesCravensLegacy.com, which highlights Craven's career. It includes exclusive clips, photos, interviews and articles. "The Last House on the Left," based on a screenplay by Adam Alleca and Carl Ellsworth ("Red Eye," "Disturbia"), stars Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt and Sara Paxton.
