'Reaper' - A New Hope

Sam recovers from Season 1 aftermath

Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for "Reaper's" season two debut.

The season two premiere is cleverly titled "Episode IV: A New Hope," and picks up right where season one left off. Sam is dealing with the reality that his father has been killed by going on a - what else - road trip with his two best friends, Ben and Sock.

We quickly find out that the three friends have been fired from their job at The Work Bench, they've been evicted from their perfect apartment, and that Andy has broken up with Sam.

Sam stupidly entrusted Sock with the task of mailing a letter of apology to Andy, who is angry because Sam has chosen his obligation to the devil over her, and the fact that he's been missing for the last four weeks. Naturally, Andy isn't quite comfortable with Sam's job as bounty hunter for the devil. Sam can't help it - his parents sold his soul to the devil!

Andy doesn't even know the worst of it all yet - that Sam is indeed the son of the devil. The boys decide now is not the time to tell her, she's angry enough with them already.

The boys decide that they can move in with Sock's mother and his new stepfather, since they can't return to their posh pad they used to have. They're shocked to find out that Sock's parents are gone...a mysterious girl has moved in to the home. They are left on their own again - with one place left to turn to, The Work Bench.

Life can't seem to get much worse...then the devil returns with an overwhelming job for Sam.  He'll have to deal with more than one pesky demon today; he's going to have to deal with an entire "fight club." Sam will have to get rid of all the demons involved, with a cattle prod of course.

After Sam's encounter with the devil, Ted, the manager of The Work Bench finds them staying in the storage room and threatens to call the police. Sock cleverly comes through for them by blackmailing Ted with his own indiscretions on the job. Cleverly, the three manage to secure their new home in the storage room, and get their jobs back. The only thing left is to get Andy back now.

We quickly learn that the new girl living in Sock's house is indeed his new sister, who is house sitting for his parents while they're away on their vacation. Sock quickly develops a crush on his cute new sister...and tries to justify it to Ben and Sam.

Sam tries to figure out how he is going to deal with the 30 or so demons that he needs to kill now. Ben suggests they ask the devil about the situation, and try to take advantage of the fact that the devil is his father.

The devil quickly says that this isn't an option, that he'll in fact be surprised if Sam actually succeeds. Apparently he's used to being disappointed in his many sons and daughters here on Earth.

Defeated, the boys decide to deal with it as mature college students would (if they did go to college...) and get drunk.  This leads to a revelation - that if they get the demons drunk and pass out...they will be able to quickly send them all back to hell.

Mission accomplished: They steal a bunch of beer and a truck from The Work Bench and set it up outside of the demon fight club. Sam is lowered into the warehouse above the sleeping demons, and starts sending them back to hell one by one.

The plan goes awry when Ben's knot holding Sam loosens, sending him into the pile of demons. They wake up and head after him; with Sam cleverly sticking the cattle prod into the puddle underneath them and sending them all back to hell, but for one.

This one demon proves to be quite an enigma - apparently he's found a way around being sent back to hell. Sam is quickly taken in by this idea, and tries to get the demon to tell him how. The demon tricks him, and slips away into the night without telling Sam anything.

Sam's new objective is to figure out how to get out of his pact with the devil too, so that he can go back to a normal life with Andy.

Sam returns to Andy, asking her to talk, and he tells her that he has found a way out of his pact. Andy is excited by this idea, and agrees that they can be happy together if they find this guy. They're back together - at least until next week.

Sam meets with the devil again, with a completely new outlook on life. He knows that he's going to figure out a way to get out of his pact, and as a result he's much more optimistic with the devil. The devil can tell something is up, and ditches Sam alone in the rain simply to spite him.

What Worked

Sam dangling over the demons looking like a fairy, to the tune of "The Dance of The Sugarplum Fairies" from the Nutcracker. I don't think I've laughed so hard in a long time!

Anything that comes out of Sock's mouth worked as well. He's hilarious...end of story.

Andy's new bangs, perfect. I'm calling my hairdresser immediately.

What Didn't Work

They've been evicted from their great apartment. I thought that having the three guys living together with two gay demons down the hall really gave season one the pick-me-up it so desperately needed, and I'm sorry to see it go.

The naive new sister of Sock's didn't do much for me. She's cute, she's young, she's hot...but does she have to be so stupid?

The fight club. Haven't we seen this before? I can think of it on "Angel" and "Sanctuary," and I'm sure there's more.

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due
