Samuel Bayer will direct the upcoming remake of Wes Craven's 1984 classic "A Nightmare On Elm Street." A veteran music video director, Bayer launched his career helming the landmark video for Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Platinum Dunes, fresh of the success of their "Friday the 13th" reboot, will commence principal photography in late April, according to Production Weekly. Wesley Strick ("Arachnophobia," "Wolf") will script. The film will retell the birth of one of horror cinema's most iconic villains, Freddy Krueger, as he prowls the dreams of the children of Springwood delivering deadly mind-blending night terrors. Reportedly, the reboot will retain a strong sense of the 1984 original. Rumors of who will play Krueger are running rampant, but Robert Englund, who played the villain in the original series, will not reprise the role, according to The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business Blog. "A Nightmare On Elm Street" is Bayer's first feature film foray. He earned a reputation as a visual revolutionary, earning numerous awards in the music video and commercial arenas. With a hands-on approach to directing, he is noted for personally handling lighting and camera operations. His resume includes work for The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie, Nike, Mountain Dew and Nissan.
