The horror-romance "Twilight" novels have become a global phenomenon, with a fifth book currently in the works and the second movie being prepped for filming. Hoping to cash in on the same mid-teen market, The CW has given the green light to "The Vampire Diaries," based on the novels by L.J. Smith.
Pre-dating "Twilight," these stories revolve around a young girl who becomes the everlasting obsession of two boys who were born into a family with a nocturnal secret †they are vampires. However, unlike the Cullens in "Twilight," both of them aren't quite reformed and one in particular has a mean streak. The series will chart the life of Elena Gilbert as both vampires fight for her soul ... and also the local residents.
A follow-up series to the original novels, entitled "Vampire Diaries: The Return," is currently being written.
The television series is being adapted by "Dawsons Creek" and "Scream" writer Kevin Williamson who is working on the script with former "Kyle XY" writer Julie Plec.
