A direct prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 horror classic "The Thing" is set to creep into theaters, Variety reported. Matthijs Van Heijningen will direct for Universal based on a script by "Battlestar Galactica" executive producer Ronald D. Moore.ÂÂ
Based on events from the 1938 novella "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr., the film will chronicle a group of Norwegian scientists in a harrowing struggle for survival after they discover an alien spaceship buried in the Antarctica ice. A shape-shifting alien, desperate to survive, mercilessly corrals the men into a deadly showdown. The Norwegian's fate serves as a catalyst for the events of Carpenter's film.ÂÂ
Producing the prequel are Strike Entertainment's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, whose credits include "Children of Men" and "Dawn Of The Dead." David Foster will executive produce. Van Heijningen was previously a commercial director. He is also working on Warner Bros' "Army of the Dead," with Zack Snyder ("300," "Watchmen").
