"Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans," which had a blanket release on Friday, has already pulled in $7.9 million at the U.S. box office. And that figure looks set to rise as the movie was also released throughout Europe, Australia and Iceland on the same day.
The figure, while may be a success for the movie, still falls short of the audience that its predecessors managed to attract as "Underworld: Evolution" grossed $10.2 million on its opening day. Its opening weekend results quickly reached $26.8 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The original 2003 movie managed to pull in a similar result, with an opening day take of $8.6 million and a weekend grab of $21.7 million.
Instead of following on from the first two films starring Kate Beckinsdale, "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" fills in some of the blanks will an origins tale on the immortal war between the Vampires and the Werewolves. At the heart of it is a star crossed romance between Sonja, a leading member of the Vampire council and Lucian, the first Lycan.
So far, the movie is receiving mixed reviews and may not reach the full potential of the first two outings of the franchise. To read Rabid Doll's review, please click here.
