“The Wolfman†has been plagued with problems from the beginning, with the original director Mark Romanek abandoning the project very early on and now Universal has announced that the movie will be delayed until the end of 2009. According to makeup artist Rick Baker though, the film is spectacular.
"It was a troubled project from the start,†Baker explained to SciFi Wire. “The first director [Mark Romanek] left, and Joe [Johnston] took it over, but it looks real good. I saw how they set it in [19th]-century England, and it looks spectacular."
The iconic remake will see Benicio del Toro utterly transformed into a werewolf as he returns home to Wales following the death of his brother, and that is one of the challenges that Baker was up against despite previously working on “An American Werewolf in London†and already earning himself six Academy Awards. But his problems didn’t come from making a realistic werewolf, and instead were the result of del Toro’s natural werewolf-like appearance.
"I had a lot of trouble with that, because Benicio already looks like a werewolf, especially when he grows his facial hair out," Baker said. "I kept telling them that he wouldn't look too much different."
One thing that has Baker concerned though is the transformation sequences; unlike other movies, del Toro will have his prosthetics on for most scenes but the actual transformation from man to beast will be handled by CGI. And according to Baker, “that is a mistake.
“The Wolfman†has been pushed from its April release to November to allow for some additional post production. There has been speculation that the movie could be in for a bumpy ride however the studio insists that there is nothing to worry about and the film will be released in all its glory on November 6, 2009.
