Review: ‘Dexter’ - Do You Take Dexter Morgan?
The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for "Do You Take Dexter Morgan" the last episode of the third season of Showtime's "Dexter."
I honestly didn't think they could do it. I was certain some of the main story lines wrapped up in the third season finale. But they did.
The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for "Do You Take Dexter Morgan" the last episode of the third season of Showtime's "Dexter."
I honestly didn't think they could do it. I was certain some of the main story lines wrapped up in the third season finale. But they did.
Unlike last season, when one of the last actions was the killing of Dexter's adversary, this time Miguel's already dead. His body is lying in a field when it is discovered. Dexter made the death look like the skinner killer's work, and Dexter says he'll "find out why this happened."
Ramon physically removes Dexter from Miguel's funeral when he tries to attend. Then someone breaks into Dexter's apartment. Dexter is relieved to find his blood slides are still there. Dexter decides that he will have to use Wolf's ring to intimidate Ramon into keeping quiet for the sake of his brother's reputation.
When Ramon barges into Dexter's wedding rehearsal, Angel and Debra arrest him. Dexter then visits Ramon in his holding cell at police HQ. Ramon says Miguel hired him as a bodyguard to protect him from Dexter. During the conversation, Ramon confesses that most of his problems came about when he was trying to clean up Miguel's messes. The two apparently come to a quiet agreement about both their brothers and their fathers. Ramon seems to forget his anger for Dexter, so Dexter decides not to tell Ramon about how Miguel murdered Wolf.
Meanwhile, Debra and Quinn are trying to locate George King, the skinner killer. According to Angel, since Miguel's death, has become even hotter. As a result of her good detective work during the case, Angel has recommended Debra for the Detective's Shield she's always wanted. Debra is overjoyed.
However, that joy turns to anger when Angel is informed that the ADA's office has been investigating Debra for sleeping with Anton, believed to be a CI. Angel says the decision is up to Maria, but he feels betrayed because Debra never told him about the affair. During their confrontation, Debra tells Angel that she has heard about how he met his girlfriend during a sting involving hookers. Angel decides to come clean with Maria on both cases. Maria confides in Dexter that she's upset when someone recommends a local highway be renamed in honor of Miguel. Dexter convinces her that some secrets are better kept hidden since he thinks the Cuban community would need to see a strong case against Miguel.
Anton bumps into Debra when he goes to the police station to pick up some of his personal effects that were previously evidence. The two seem to hit it off and agree to get together for coffee later.
Dexter feels he's caught Rita in a lie when her mother sends her a card that includes the phrase, "Let's hope the third one's  the charm." Rita says it is about her third child, but Dexter does some digging and finds that he will be her third husband, not the second as she's always said. She was actually married at the age of 16, but divorced a few months later.
When Dexter picks up Rita's kids, he notices a car is following them. He runs a yellow light, and the car behind him ends up in an accident. When he turns around to see who was driving the car, the person has fled, so he figures it is Ramon after him. The fender bender ends up on the police's radar, and the photo of the person involved turns out to be George King, not Ramon.  The only piece of evidence in the car the police find is a tobacco leaf, which sends Debra and Quinn to an abandoned tobacco company, but they don't find anyone there.
Debra is told by Maria that she has earned her shield, but she can't be on the King case any longer. Debra is thrilled just to become a detective. Later, a stack of files about the CI's her father worked with is left on her desk, but she doesn't have time to go through them.
Dexter has not been able to track down Ramon. But George King finds Dexter first, knocking him out on the night before his wedding. Dexter wakes up in King's hiding place, and he finds he's tied to a table. To keep King off balance, Dexter tells him that he killed Freebo, so any chance of getting money from him is long gone. King doesn't believe him, so he goes off to get his tools to torture Dexter.
Dexter uses the opportunity to rock the table he's tied to over. When he hits the floor, he breaks his wrist. He begins to struggle with King.As Debra and Anton begin to celebrate Debra's promotion, Vince calls and tells Debra that the tobacco in King's car was 12 years old and that the company that made it has moved.
She decides to go check out the more recent location with as many police as possible. As Debra and two squad cards pull into the building, Dexter breaks King's neck. Just as the first police car enters, King's body falls on it from above, ending up under the car, which drags it underneath for a while. Debra finds the skinned body and enjoys the irony of the situation.
Dexter shows up at the wedding location, sporting a cast on his hand. As Dexter speaks with Rita briefly he thinks to himself that he will let Rita keep her secret. Debra helps Dexter with his tie and two share a moment about Harry.Dexter's wedding vow is to be the best husband and father he can be, thinking to himself that he is being completely honest in that statement. We see images of the reception and Dexter seems content with his future as husband and father.
A tiny drop of blood falls from Dexter's cast onto the back of Rita's wedding dress as he thinks to himself: "Life is good."
What Worked
This episode was the fastest-paced of the season so far.
As I said before, I was amazed that they wrapped up as much as they did. The show was a good one, typing up loose ends every few minutes. Nice twists and turns. Also, good acting all around. It was nice to see Debra get her shield. They did leave the information about her father for us to pick up on next season. I'm still not sold on the Debra/Anton relationship. While they are opposites and opposites supposedly attract, people with little in common often break up after the initial thrill is gone. We'll see.
At the end, Dexter feeling that it was OK for Rita to have a secret of her own was kind of a relief to me. It would be really unbelievable for a man with as many secrets as Dexter to not allow Rita any as well.
What Didn’t Work
While I'm glad that Debra got her shield, the reasons Maria gave it to her just didn't feel convincing to me. Coming in 2009, the show's fourth season!
