The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for “The Damage A Man Can Do,†episode eight in "Dexter's" third season run.
Miguel, wanting to get into the act of being a serial killer as much as possible, suggests his and Dexter's next target: a former football player named Billy Fleeter who has killed several people to help settle his gambling debts. However, this time, Miguel wants to actually do the killing.
Dexter and Miguel follow Fleeter at a local casino. As they do, Dexter starts to tell Miguel in on his methods, telling him several aspects of the "code." Doing more "research," Dexter and Miguel break into Fleeter's house. Dexter finds a likely murder weapon baseball bat with blood traces and discovers via a gambling ledger that Fleeter is down $30,000.
When the blood on the bat matches one of Fleeter's victims, Dexter takes Miguel on a serial killer shopping spree. They purchase supplies (including a knife for killin') and put down the plastic in a casino supply storage facility.
Inconspicuous Dexter and the all-too-obvious Miguel (wearing a dark hat and sunglasses) next make contact with Fleeter at a casino bar. But as they move to follow Fleeter and take him down, a man recognizes Prado and the two speak to each other. This freaks out Dexter, who immediately wants to shut the operation down. They agree to make a final decision the following day.
When Dexter and Miguel meet, Dexter now is against going forward with the killing. The two talk about Dexter's murdering history and each other's issues with their fathers. Miguel expresses that he can relate to feeling some of the same "darkness" as Dexter, and wants to "let some of mine out, too."
Dexter and Miguel take down Fleeter at his home, carting him back to the room they have prepared for the killing to take place. Dexter passes the knife to Miguel, who appears almost eager to continue. After saying they represent "justice," Prado stabs the knife into Fleeter's chest. "How do you feel?" Dexter asks Miguel. "Fantastic," comes the creepy reply from Miguel, who leaves Dexter to clean up.
Meanwhile, Rita is struggling with her pregnancy, her new job and her coming wedding ceremony. After some coaching from Debra, Dexter presents Rita with a brand new engagement ring. She apologizes for her many horomonal-based outbreaks, mentioning that it feels like she has a monster living inside her. "Maybe I can help you out with that one," Dexter says.
Angel's relationship with Gianna continues to grow. When he has to call and cancel a date due to work, Angel's stumbling, fumbling phone call only endears him to her.
Meanwhile, Debra finds out that Anton has never been on the books as a C.I., that Quinn always paid him in cash. Quinn tells Debra that Anton was never officially an informant, that his arrest record was never filed. When learning this upsets Debra, Quinn puts it together that Anton and she are "an item." Debra says she plans to tell Anton the department had been illegally manipulating him, and reminds Quinn of the allegation she heard from Amado that Quinn was responsible for the death of a cop. Debra tells Anton that he is no longer under obligation to help the police, and the two make will meet at breakfast the following day to celebrate. When Anton is a no-show, Debra wonders if Anton ever really had any interest in her at all.
Following up on Debra's idea on who the cutting killer is, Homicide has brought in  tree-trimmers for questioning. When Mr. King tells Debra and Quinn that Mario, one his employees, killed somebody with a knife back in Nicaragua, the two decide to question him.
When Quinn and Debra appear, Mario runs, but is tackled by Quinn. At the police station, Mario is desperate to stay in America until Mr. King's name is brought up. Now, he only wants to leave the country ... alone. Quinn and Debra decide they will return to question Mr. King more in the near future.
Debra goes back to Anton's apartment, where she realizes that the overhanging trees just outside his door make him the latest likely victim of the killer.
Wolf tells Maria that Miguel has been giving her a lot trouble recently, and the two make plans to attend a police function of Maria's together. The two laugh and joke about growing old and share their likes and dislikes.
Miguel doesn't return home, as Dexter has suggested. Instead, he knocks on a door. When Wolf answers, Miguel thrusts himself inside and closes the door behind him.
What Worked
Yet again Jimmy Smits does a great acting job. The guy who seemed out of place and clumbsy during the early episodes this year now has taken on the role of a serial killer with a flourish.
Good pacing, interesting twists, and very nice acting from the cast keeping this fast-paced episode moving at a good clip.
What Didn’t Work
I guess the only one in the country who didn't know Anton was in deep doo-doo when he didn't show up for breakfast with Debra was Debra herself. That was way too obvious, and it was too stupid of Debra to wallow in self-pity.
Will it be the novice versus the master serial killer in the coming weeks? The previews certainly make it look that way!
