Review: ‘True Blood’ †I Don’t Wanna Know

This review contains MODERATE SPOILERS for “I Don’t Wanna Know,” the tenth episode of HBO’s “True Blood.” For a series that looked to be a modern tale of a rising Vampire nation, backed by serious politics, a lot of racial tension and down-to-Earth issues, “True Blood” has done a pretty good job of introducing its own brand of featured creatures.

Shapeshifters, demons, werewolves and psychics are all part of the building “True Blood” mythology and their introduction has been so gracefully and subtly done that you don’t quite know how the show reached this place. What differentiates “True Blood” from other vampire adventures (like the renowned “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” “Angel” or even “Blade”) is the simple nature of anything supernatural or vampire in origin. All of the visuals are impressive in a very matter-of-fact and un-ambitious way and rely more on the raw human emotion and reaction to the paranormal and unexpected. In this case, Sam’s transformation into Dean the Dog and Tara’s struggle against inner demon focused more on each of the characters and the situation they find themselves in rather than any element of flashiness. Indeed, even the same holds true for the vampire council that passes judgment over Bill for his murderous transgression in last week’s episode †all of the shots are very cold and very static (not unlike the vampires themselves) but it is the actions of everyone present that carries the scene along with such interest in fascination. This is not the House of Chthon and the Magistrate has a very authoritative presence that there is no question who is in charge. Interesting of all, what he asks Bill to do in penance for killing Longshadow goes against everything he believes in as a Mainstreaming vampire. What Worked As always, Tara’s exclamations are a wonderful part f the series, and in “I Don’t Wanna Know” the favorite is without a doubt “oh, you nasty bitch” during her exorcism. Her recount of her why, why, why’s was another added comedy value for the character who on a weekly basis goes through an amazing emotional journey but still manages to maintain a bleak and tongue-in-cheek comic relief tone. Avery’s staking of Jason’s pet and the stickiness that followed also had a grotesque comedy charm to it and had it not been for his reaction at seeing Avery do the deed, then the whole event would have been in the same league as “Shaun of the Dead.” The way in Avery is slowly suckering Jason is one of the most interesting elements to “True Blood” and now that the couple have hit a few bumps in the road, it will be interesting to see exactly where they go. The vampire justice system was dark, bloody and completely unlike that of other vampire set-ups … just like “True Blood” itself. What Didn’t Work There is still no resolution to the murder of beloved Gran or the string of other deaths that have permeated the shows since its pilot episode. There is only so long it can be dragged out before you no longer care who the killer really is. Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due “True Blood” stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten and Rutina Wesley. “I Don’t Wanna Know” was written by Chris Offutt and directed by Scott Winut. “True Blood” airs on HBO’s Sundays at 9 p.m. EST.
