The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the episode of the Showtime series, "Dexter."
Last time, you may remember I asked what would happen when Dexter and Miguel disagreed. This week, we find out.
Camilla, Dexter's friend from Records, continues to lose her battle with cancer. She gives Dexter pictures from his youth and reminds him of his promise to bring her the perfect key lime pie.
Meanwhile, Miguel's brother Ramon is forced into early retirement because of his kidnapping and torturing people in his quest to find Freebo.
Rita has Dexter putting together a list of guests to invite to their wedding. At first, Dexter can only think of Deb, his sister.
Debra meanwhile is wracked with guilt over Wendell's death. She's sure he is dead because she contacted him.
Miguel decides it is time to make a difference, and that means to remove a big obstacle in his path, Defense Attorney Ellen Wolf. Miguel asks Dexter to keep an open mind as he reads Miguel's research on all the criminals she has set free.
Camilla's pain is too much, and she asks Dexter to take her life. Dexter balks. She later apologizes for putting Dexter in such a terrible position.
Informant Anton is going to be under surveillance because the cops think Debra might be right -- but she can't bear it and tells him to leave town.
There's trouble in the Prado house as Miguel seems to go into a "dark place" whenever home, according to his wife.
Dexter has considered killing Wolf, but she has done nothing except her job. Miguel is furious when Dexter says no, and Dexter takes Rita and her kids back to their home as quickly as possible.
Wolf, however, has been contacted by Albert Chung, a murderer sought by the police. Even she can't bear the thought of helping Chung, so she arranges for the police to know when he'll be at her home, and they arrest him.
When Miguel discovers what Wolf has done, he's not mad at Dexter anymore. In fact, he respects Dexter for standing up to him. In a moment of unexpected friendship, Dexter asks Miguel to be his best man at the upcoming wedding.
Debra is surprised to learn that Anton has not left town. He wants to spy for her, and the two grow ever closer.
When Camilla's cancer begins to slow down and she faces an extended period of pain, Dexter brings her "the perfect Key Lime pie," laced with fast-acting poisons to end her suffering.
What Worked
The whole Camilla storyline got to me, probably because of the recent passing of my 92 year-old mother. I felt a lot of sympathy for Camilla, and again Dexter does something good that's tinged by something bad -- ending her suffering by killing her. It is this kind of "gray" storytelling that makes this show unique and enjoyable.
Miguel continues to integrate into the show, and Smits feels more natural each week.
Good pacing, good acting and good twists and turns -- the usual "Dexter" stuff.
What Didn't Work
How long will Miguel be content to play second fiddle to Dexter? I bet it won't be long before Miguel considers Dexter to be his weapon, not his conscience.
Even though Miguel didn't get mad at Dexter, one still has to wonder when a serious disagreement develops. Will Miguel be content to let Dexter go on as a serial killer? And will Dexter be comfortable with someone knowing his secret? Time will tell.
Oh, and Anton is dead meat.
