Review: ‘True Blood’ †The Fourth Man In The Fire
This review contains MODERATE SPOILERS for “The Fourth Man In The Fire,†the eighth episode of HBO’s “True Blood.â€Â
As if loosing dear old Gran wasn’t enough, Sookie’s (Anna Paquin) now got her vampire boyfriend to worry about.
In the usual slow pace of “True Blood,†the episode deals with the intensities of all of the characters and how they are coping with the lose that is circulating all of them.

As if loosing dear old Gran wasn’t enough, Sookie’s (Anna Paquin) now got her vampire boyfriend to worry about.
In the usual slow pace of “True Blood,†the episode deals with the intensities of all of the characters and how they are coping with the lose that is circulating all of them.Tara (Rutina Wesley) and her mother adapting to their new life now that the demon has been exorcised is nice to see given how much both characters have been through, but now that their lives are starting to come together in a very family way, you can’t help but wonder what wrench will be thrown into the works to mess it all up. Tara’s argument with Sookie is certainly a step in the right direction towards that goal.
In the same vein, the mixing of your typical human variety drugs with V is an interesting concept, and leads to a very Jason (Ryan Kwanten) moment as he instantly agrees with the girl he has just slept with. Not to mention the surprise revelation that he had an intense experience with her without either of them losing their pants. While Sookie brings out the worst in her brother, Amy (Lizzy Caplan) on the other hand brings out the best in him (to begin with at least) and she carries an insight into the vampire nation that thus far even Bill has not been able to present.
Thus far the real glimpse into the undead world has come from those rare trips to Fangtasmic, and “The Fourth Man In The Fire†is no different with the interrogation of their accountants showing more than just their teeth.
What Worked
There was something touching about Sookie saying goodbye to Bill by visiting his tombstone (his original one) when she believes him to be dead, however it is immediately followed by an almost out-of-place reunion between the star-crossed lovers.
Tara is always a fresh of breath air amongst the false pretense of the series, and her outburst against the local Christians was filled with so much hysterical cynicism. “When you go to bed, you are just as fucked up and miserable as I am,†is as brutally honest as anything else on the show and is what makes “True Blood†different to most other series.
The further exploration of racism was again prominent on the show (and not just through Tara and Sam’s twisted relationship). Arlene’s (Carrie Preston) reaction to discovering that Bill would be babysitting her children carried more racial bigotry than any of the dialogue from the show (and given what comes out of Tara’s mouth, that’s saying something).
What Didn’t Work
Bill bursting from the Earth and immediately feasting upon his beloved and having his merry way with her in the middle of the graveyard was a bit of a surprise perhaps a little bit over the top. All romance was cast to the wind and instead the duo gave in to raw passion in a moment that will either leave you glued to the screen or cringing in your chair.
Also, the speed at which Amy takes a job as Merlottes as a replacement for the late Dawn was another artificial lurch on the series, and the lack of serious questions on the validity of last week’s exorcism was also something of a down-turn.
Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due
“True Blood†stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten and Rutina Wesley. “The Fourth Man In The Fire†was written by Alexander Woo and directed by Michael Lehmann. “True Blood†airs on HBO’s Sundays at 9 p.m. EST.
