Review: ‘Dexter’ - Turning Biminese

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for "Turning Biminese," the fifth episode of Season 3 of "Dexter." First, my apologies for not posting reviews of the last few "Dexter" episodes. Real life gets in the way of genre programming sometimes, so let me recap as quickly as I can what's happened since I last wrote a review.

Dexter has revealed Ramon, Miguel Prado's brother, to be so much of a hot head that he can't be trusted with any secrets. The Prado family and Dexter's clan continue to grow closer together, giving Dexter less and less private time. Uncertain he'd make a good father, Dexter finally came to the decision to marry Rita and proposed. Meanwhile, killings continue with someone shaving off tattoos from the victims. Of course, since Freebo is long dead, it is uncertain just who is behind this spree. Debra is on the case, but she's growing closer and closer to her informant. When a known child pornographer starts talking with Rita's daughter, Dexter "protects his family" by eliminating the threat permanently. This week, Dexter and Miguel continue to grow closer. They are playing golf when Miguel tells Dexter about Ethan Turner, someone Miguel feels was guilty but got off anyway. Dexter picks up on the thought, and tracks Ethan down, learning he is going on a cruise soon. Dexter decides to take his boat out on the same day, although he says he's going to a different place to fish. Angel, who was nearly busted by an undercover cop in vice when he propositioned her, seeks her out and indicates his interest in her. She says she "never says never," and that gives Angel hope there might be something there for him. Rita goes house-hunting with Miguel's wife, but she notices that she's bleeding after they leave a house she likes, so they rush to the hospital. No one can reach Dexter by phone. Dexter meanwhile has boarded the cruise ship and eliminated Ethan by dumping his body parts overboard from the ship. When he gets back to the shore, he finally gets words about Rita's problems and rushes to the hospital, where he promises to be there whenever Rita needs him. After that, Miguel confronts Dexter, saying he Ethan has disappeared. He also knows that Dexter didn't go fishing where he said he was. But Miguel isn't mad at Dexter -- he seems happy to have someone who can clean up the messes he is unable to using the law.  Is this the birth of a new crime-fighting team? What Worked It's an odd thing to say, but Dexter's struggles between relationships and accomplishments are things I can relate to (although I'm not a serial killer, of course). There are things we want to do in life, and yet we also seek the warmth of human companionship. It takes compromise and a lot of work to make both possible, and Dexter is going from an adolescent to an adult in this way. The acting continues to be great, always making me feel like I'm there in person rather than watching a TV program. The show's pace continues to be brisk and keep my attention. What Didn't Work I know that the producers said they felt Dexter's adopted dad was too "Yoda" last year, but this year it seems more like "Yoda" than ever to me. The fantasy scenes where he advises Dexter don't ring all that true to me. In fact, it seems like dad is just a nagging conscience instead of something that caused Dexter to question what was going on. It's too pat for me. Rita's pregnancy (bringing life into the world) as a counterpoint to Dexter's murderous desires has been an interesting counterpoint, but I think that point has been made. Let's move on from that, okay? Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due “Dexter” airs on Showtime each Sunday at 9 p.m. The show stars Michael C. Smith, Julie Benz, Jennifer Carpenter, and James Remar. “Turning Biminese” was written by Tim Schlattmann and was directed by Marcos Siega. Digg It! Express yourself and be part of the news!
