‘Fringe’ … An Unimpressive Start

J.J. Abrams has "Fringe," but it doesn't yet have the fans. The series premiere of the Fox series struggled to get past NBC's "America's Got Talent," earning just a 5.9 rating/9 share according to Fast National Ratings from Nielsen Media Research. The NBC reality show earned a 6.7/11, according to Zap2it, easily winning the hour, while "Big Brother 10" on CBS earned just a 4.5/7 for third place. "Fringe" did seem to hold on to the viewers that started with the show, maintaining a 5.9/9 into the second hour, before giving way to "Hole in the Wall." However, just like Monday night with "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," all was not lost with Fox. The network once again dominated the key advertising demographic of adults 18 to 49 pulling in a 2.9 rating, followed closely by ABC with a 2.7, meaning that total viewers may not have been out there for "Fringe," but the ones that matter to advertisers were. However, Fox finished about 2 million viewers behind NBC with a 5.2/8 compared to the Peacock's 6.6/11. ABC was third with a 4.1/7 while CBS had a 3.7/6. With only two network genre shows airing right now, "Fringe" was the winner for the week, beating the 4.1/6 earned by "Sarah Connor" the night before. Fast Nationals usually provide a snapshot of what Americans are watching by pulling numbers from the top urban markets that includes both live viewing and same-day timeshifted viewing. A rating point generally represents more than 1.1 million households while the share indicates the percentage of televisions turned on that was tuned to the specific program. These numbers typically shift when final ratings are issued. Digg It! Express yourself and be part of the news! Leave a comment below or join our rabid discussions on the SyBoards.
