When season 4 of "Supernatural" begins this fall, Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) may be seeking comfort in the arms of a beautiful brunette after witnessing the violent death of his brother, Dean (Jensen Ackles). TV Guide has announced that Genevieve Cortese ("Wildfire") has been cast as a small-town waitress who has become romantically involved with the younger brother. She will appear in the season premiere, with no word yet on any further involvement. Until the new season begins, fans of "Supernatural" can sustain themselves with appearances and autograph sessions at the many conventions, one of which continues this week. Comic-Con International takes place at the San Diego Convention Center all week, with "Supernatural" highlights this Saturday. However, anyone who doesn't already have tickets is out of luck: the high profile event is sold out, with over 124,000 fans of genre entertainment expected to attend. Ackles and Padalecki will pacify rabid fans with an autograph session on Saturday. Last year's session with the actors became such an overcrowded crush of anxious fandom that security used threats of a fire marshal evacuation to move the pace along. "Supernatural" has been CW's bubble show, always living under the threat of cancellation due to ratings. But show creator Eric Kripke thinks the show's cult status helps make the fans so dedicated. "I think the fact that we are not an out-of-the-box hit actually helps," he said. "Everyone feels like they're in on this very, very cool, wonderful thing that the general public doesn't know about. It makes them feel like insiders, and who doesn't want to feel that way?" Season 4 of "Supernatural" returns to the CW on September 18 in its usual slot: Thursdays at 9/8c following "Smallville."
