New Hammer Films Part Of Our Time

Hammer Films, the horror production company that made its name in the 1960's, is set for a comeback this year with a whole new lineup of films. Only this time, they will match the horrors of the present day.
Production on "The Wake Wood" is slated to begin this year, with "The Resident" and "The Quiet Ones" following soon after. According to Variety, each movie will take a traditional horror idea (such as ghosts and exorcisms) and give them a modern-day twist with the old Hammer Horror charm.
"Those earlier Hammer films were very much of their time, and there is a lot of affection for them, but we have to keep up with audiences' expectations today," says Hammer chief exec Simon Oakes. "I like to think of ourselves now as dealing more in the Hitchcockian areas of terror and suspense."
Over the last few years, British horror has made something of a comeback with a varied range of scary tales making their presence known at the international box office. The main titles of course being "28 Days Later," "The Descent" and more recently "Doomsday."
"With '28 Days Later,' you had a respected, nonhorror director in Danny [Boyle] directing a horror film, and the British establishment took note," director Neil Marshall said. "It took me six years to get financing for 'Dog Soldiers,' and the money ended up coming from the U.S. After '28 Days,' though, people here saw horror films as lucrative and respectable. 'The Descent' ended up being financed 100% with British money, which is quite unusual."
It looks like horror in the United Kingdom could be set for a large scale revival, and Hammer will be there to cash in.
