SyFy Portal, Rabid Doll Announce 2008-09 Coverage

As science-fiction, fantasy and horror go more and more mainstream, the list of genre television shows covered by both SyFy Portal and its sister site Rabid Doll has grown to yet a new record number. New shows that will be covered by SyFy Portal for the 2008-09 season include "Dollhouse," "Fringe," "Knight Rider," "Life on Mars" and "Sanctuary." They will join a slate of returning shows that include "Battlestar Galactica," "Doctor Who," "Eureka," "Heroes," "Lost," "Pushing Daisies," "Smallville," "Stargate: Atlantis," and "Torchwood." On top of that, Rabid Doll will cover "Reaper," "Supernatural" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," which will then be picked up by SyFy Portal. Rabid Doll is in the process of repositioning itself with more of an independent horror focus, but such a changeover isn't expected until the end of 2008, according to Michael Hinman, founder of SyFy Portal and head of The SyUniverse Group Inc. that operates both sites. "When we do make that changeover, those shows will stay on Rabid Doll through the end of the 2008-09 season, and then we'll figure out what we're going to do for the 2009-10 season when the time comes," Hinman said. "Alan Stanley Blair, our assistant news editor for SyFy Portal, has been doing a fabulous job as interim editor of Rabid Doll while we await the return of Sherri Lonon as the site's editor. But that may take another several months, unfortunately." Because of the number of genre programs on the air, SyFy Portal can't cover all of them logistically, so programs are chosen based on readership interest and overall mainstream interest. SyFy Portal will celebrate its 10th anniversary in August. The site was originally founded as SyFy World in a site located on GeoCities (before its acquisition by Yahoo!), and originally covered "Earth: Final Conflict," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager," virtually the only science-fiction shows on television at the time. SyFy Portal is led by news editor Wayne Hall that includes the staff of Bryant Griffin as lead designer; Nick Chase as lead programmer; Robin Brownfield, Julie Pyle and Marx Pyle as staff writers; Dan Compora and Ed Left as columnists; and Miguel Pagan as the site's Web producer.
