The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for “Cancun,†an episode of The CW’s show, “Reaper.â€Â
Sam (Bret Harrison) is used to seeing strange things, but the spirit of a dead demon is new to him.
Steve (Michael Ian Black) shows up in a stain on the wall of The Work Bench and the security camera monitor, before becoming a full-fledged apparition with the instructions to ask about Cancun. That phrase remains a mystery to Sam until the end when he needs it most.
Andi (Missy Peregrym) helps Sam track down the escaped soul and Sock (Tyler Labine) falls for a succubus named Marlana (Cindy Sampson). Sure she shaves years off his lifespan, but as far as he's concerned, that's a small price to pay for the biggest high he could have ever imagined. Too bad for him that she doesn't appreciate him trying to pimp her out to Ben (Rick Gonzalez).
But all that takes a backseat to the real meat and potatoes of the episode: the demon rebellion targeting Sam and questions regarding his paternity. Tony (Ken Marino) and the other demons set a trap for Sam to lock him forever in a cage designed by King Solomon. Sam believes Tony is after Satan (Ray Wise) himself, but Tony believes Sam to be the bigger threatâ€the anti-Christ that will end the worldâ€so the mild-mannered Work Bench employee becomes fallen angel public enemy #1.
Sam also becomes suspicious of his parents, whom he has always believed to be innocent, hapless victims in all this. However, he notices his parents (Andrew Airlie, Allison Hossack) arguing inside a chalk circle, designed to keep their conversation secret from the devil, and realizes they know more than they have let on. Confused and hurt - and by now beginning to suspect that he is the Devil's son - Sam is unable to get any straight answers from his parents or the Devil.
Tony lures Sam to the cage and throws him in, but Sam's dad shows up and tries pleading for his son's life. Tony, however, shows no mercy and tosses the unconscious dad in with his doomed son. As they are buried alive, Sam asks Tony about Cancun. Tony, angry with Sam for suggesting that his dead lover would choose to show himself to him, explains that Cancun was the location of their first vacation. They said it was so beautiful that is was almost like heaven. Then, the unimaginable happens: Steve appears. When he says it's even more beautiful than Cancun, Tony realizes he was wrong - God's love and mercy does indeed extend to demons and his beloved Steve is speaking to him from heaven. He hulks out into his demon form and saves Sam, who must then break the news of his father's death to his mother.
There is one more surprise in store, however, when Mrs. Oliver digs her still living husband out of his makeshift grave.
What Worked
Finally, there is more attention to the questions regarding Mr. and Mrs. Oliver's roles in Sam's predicament. From the beginning, I have suspected that Sam was the son of the Devil, but now I've been led to believe that was just a red herring. Or is it? Honestly, I am grateful that the season ended with so many questions. (Addressing a situation doesn't mean you have to kill the mystery).
The concept of God's infinite love and mercy extending to all his creations was beautifully done and was a defining moment in the show's balancing act regarding the roles of good and evil in our world. I am truly impressed that "Reaper" manages to touch on such deep issues amidst all the levity.
As always, the actors did a very good job. I find myself especially enjoying the exchanges between Sam and the Devil, and I'm particularly glad that their growing bond hasn't succeeded in neutering the big bad wolf. Make no mistake, the Devil is still evilâ€all the more disturbing considering Wise's considerable charm.
What Didn't Work
Josie's (Valerie Rae Miller) role has always seemed to be little more than an after-thought, and her interjection in this episode seemed forced. I've been an advocate of the women of the show having more to do, but all they have come up with for her is to have her act as an on-again, off-again lover for Sock. And Andi appears to have become Sam's Girl Friday.
And I could be wrong, but I thought the vessels only worked when Sam used them. Yet Sock saved the day this time with his succubus-enhanced pitch.
Credit Where Credit is Due
