‘The X-Files’ Reunion Emotional

Series creator Chris Carter has continually stated that the new "The X-Files" movie is a “stand-alone, scary movie†that incorporates the best aspects of the popular television show and marks the passage of time in the lives of the characters. And in a recent interview with SciFi Wire, he elaborated on how much of an emotional experience the reunion was.
Six years have passed since the “The X-Files†ended and the sequel will mirror that passage of time ... meaning it won't be picking up exactly where the series ended.
"The truth is, after all that time, Mulder and Scully were different people, and we were different people, so the 'X-Files' we came up with five years ago is still the 'X-Files' in the movie, but their personal lives - the state of their relationship, all those things - have changed over time, and that was kind of interesting," said Frank Spotnitz who wrote the script and is also producing. "To not only think about them after all this time, but, really, us as writers and what mattered to us and what we wanted to say in this movie [has also changed]."
This is not to say, however, that Carter and Spotnitz had difficulty writing their beloved Mulder and Scully. In fact, Carter believed the “vacation†from the grueling television series schedule helped the creative team begin from a fresh perspective. “It was nice to take that breather and come back at this fresh and rejuvenated," he said. And Spotnitz agreed.
"I know it was sort of startling to me how deep my connection still was to the characters after all of this time and how much it mattered to me what's become of them and what they think and what they would do," Spotnitz said. "It felt vital to me, and it felt very interesting, and it was ... really fun. It was really very enjoyable, working on the story and reconvening with them again."
Seeing stars David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully) as their alter-egos also caused the writing team to get emotional about the project, they recently revealed at WonderCon in San Francisco. Hearing the voices of the two FBI agents come alive at a table read - and reuniting the stars for the first time since 2002 - was very exciting.
"And then a week later, we had camera tests at Chris (Carter’s) house, and [Anderson's] hair was red again, and David had ... got his hair cut like Mulder again, and it was like, 'Oh, my,'†Spotnitz said. “It was like bringing back the dead, in a way, or like finding somebody who'd gone missing for six years. So, to me, it feels very powerful."
"The X-Files†movie is currently in production in Vancouver, B.C. and is currently slated to be released on July 25.
