Warner Bros. will soon make its decision on whether or not to green light an ambitious adaption of Stephen King’s "The Dark Tower," according to Deadline.

Akiva Goldsman ("I Am Legend," "Fringe") recently submitted a new script to the studio that facilitates a reduced budget. Previously, Universal Pictures departed the project because of budget concerns.

Along with producers Ron Howard ("Da Vinci Code") and Brian Grazer, Goldsman is shaping King’s novel series into a feature film trilogy and two limited-run television series that would jointly chronicle the epic tale.

On the casting front, Russell Crowe ("Gladiator," "A Beautiful Mind") is reportedly in talks for the role of gunslinger Roland Deschain; Javier Bardem ("No Country for Old Men") was initially considered for the part.

For the television component, Warner Bros. is expected to seek a partner such as HBO, which has enjoyed success with "Game of Thrones," an adaption of George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" fantasy novels.

"The Dark Tower" includes seven books and fuses elements of fantasy and horror with the western genre. The books follow Deschain -- the last of a knightly order of gunslingers -- as he takes on a quest to save the world and secure the key to the nexus of all universes.

Goldsman said the project will reflect “an alternate Americana, one part post-apocalyptic, one part Sergio Leone.”
