'Teen Wolf' - Shape Shifted
It seems broken teens make the best werewolves
This review contains spoilers.
"I seriously don't understand how you survive without me sometimes."
Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) is an alpha without a pack. He bit Jackson (Colton Haynes) and was rejected. He has asked Scott (Tyler Posey) to join him more than once and has been rejected.
So what is next? Prey on the broken kids, convince them they can have power and can belong. Of course they will accept his offer and his bite.
But it has its downside. Just ask Issac (William Gerber). Abused by his father, he wanted to be able to stand up to him. But even with that power, when confronted by his dad, he just ran. When his dad pursued him, the door to his car was ripped off and a creature killed him.
While at practice, Scott smells another werewolf on the team. He is determined to find out who it is. Jackson thinks Scott may be on to him and feigns an injury. Scott finds out it's Issac, and at that moment, the police come to question him regarding the death of his father.
One thing I don't understand is why Scott feels responsible for another werewolf. Derek created him and Issac permitted. It seems contrived just to keep Scott involved. And where Scott is involved, so is Stiles and Allison (Crystal Reed).
It's the full moon and since Issac is a new wolf, he is going to change in police custody. Scott wants him rescued, but cannot go himself. He needs to be secured for the full moon. So the team of Stiles and Derek are off to the rescue. And rescuing is needed, since Allison learns her Gerard (Michael Hogan) has sent a hunter to kill him.
I really don't think the story needed the added element of a hunter going to kill a werewolf in police custody. The mere fact that he was going to change in such a public place was more than enough tension. But it did give Allison something to do, and if nothing else, the writers try to keep all of their regulars involved in the story.
Before heading to the police station, Derek and Scott look around Issac's house and find his father's favorite type of torture. He would lock Issac in a freezer in the basement. They decide the freezer is the best place for Scott to spend the full moon, while Derek goes on the rescue.
While Derek goes with Stiles, Allison stays with Scott and secures him for the full moon. As she heads upstairs, she hears a hissing sound and see two eyes staring at her in the darkness. She begins screaming, and Scott, in mid transformation, smashes his way out of the freezer to defend her. They stand together and see what can only be described as a were-lizard climb the walls and escape.
It was an interesting twist, and this creature is at least as powerful as a werewolf, given how it tore the door off of a car. Given the lighting of the scene, the creature looked great. We got a nice close up of the face and I hope it's make up, not CGI, but these days, who knows.
Oh, Derek and Stiles defeat the hunter, and Derek escapes with Issac, leaving Stiles to explain to his father the police chief (Linden Ashby). Stiles is finding himself in more and more trouble due to his association with the werewolf world. I wonder if there's going to be a point where he says enough.
And on the Jackson front, he gets a video camera to film his transformation. He sets it up and goes to sleep. Unfortunately for him, when he wakes, all he sees is himself sleeping. I like the irony of the guy who wanted the bite so bad being immune to it. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Points of Interest
1. As I thought, Lydia (Holland Rodan) doesn't remember anything about her time in the woods naked. Or at least that's what she says.
2. Apparently an Alpha can force a wolf back into his human form, even during a full moon.
3. I had to flip the image, and brighten it up a bit, but yea, that's a were-lizard.
4. Wolves are stronger in a pack, in all ways. Even an alpha.
5. It appears Derek has given up the house in the woods and is now staying in an abandoned subway tunnel. How "villain's lair" of him.
6. Argent (JR Bourne) hasn't told his father about Scott. Apparently Argent intents to hold to the code if at all possible.
What Worked
I just love scenes with Derek and Stiles. These two can't be more opposite, but can still manage to work together. They are comedy gold together. I know Stiles doesn't like him, but works with him for Scott. I am not sure if Derek likes Stiles, but he does recognize him for being smart. And a leader needs that.
What Didn't Work
Forcing the principal of the high school, and all the sudden Gerard is the new principal? I realize it's just television, but that just doesn't happen. Does Gerard have any credentials that could make this believable?
And why the high school? Is turning teenagers a common tactic among alphas? Stiles expresses an opinion early in the episode, but he doesn't really know.
