"The lone wolf … Possibly kicked out of his own pack … or the survivor of a pack that was hunted down, maybe even murdered … and possibly alone by his own choice. Certainly not a wise choice."

The Season 2 premiere of "Teen Wolf" got off to a howling good start (yea, I went there). It's only been days since the Season 1 finale, and tensions are only getting worse.

Jackson (Colton Haynes) got his reward for helping Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) in receiving the werewolf bite. He is feeling more powerful and doesn't need anyone. He even refuses Derek's request to join his pack. It's a decision that Derek appears to rescind when Jackson bleeds from the nose and the ears, his body appearing to reject the bite.

Lydia (Holland Roden) is up and about, having had a miraculous recovery from her attack. She takes a shower, and while doing so, the tub fills with dirty, hair filled water. She begins to freak out and reaches down, and a hand reaches up out of the water and grabs her. She screams and disappears from the hospital.

Scott (Tyler Posey) and Stiles (Dylan O'Brien) search for her, as does Argent (JR Bourne) and his hunters, both groups fearing she has turned into a werewolf. She turns up a day later at an attack scene, showing no clue that she is aware what happened.

The fallout from the Season 1 showdown continues. Argent catches Scott and Allison (Crystal Reed) in an intimate moment and pulls a gun on Scott. Allison begs for Scott's life and promises her father she will never see him again.

Argent backs down and lets Scott live. But seeing this is a teen drama, they continue to see each other. Scott does provide strength and support to Allison when her family seems unable.

It's a basic teen plot and probably the least interesting part of the episode. We know they will eventually get caught and somehow rise above the troubles surrounding them. But boy, do they have troubles.

Arriving at the funeral of Kate Argent is her father, Gerard (Michael Hogan). And in case you're wondering, he too is a hunter. That evening while Scott is searching for Lydia, another werewolf attacks him. The wolf is snared, and Derek pulls Scott away.

They witness Gerard kill the wolf, declaring that he is throwing out the code, and all wolves are to be killed, whether or not they have killed a human.

The writer has set up many story points for the season, and it all looks good to me. As I said above, the romance between Scott and Allison is probably the weakest part of the episode, but given the target audience for the show, we won't get away from it.

It was a fun episode, and I for one am glad to have it back. I just hope it manages to hold up this level of quality.

Points of Interest

1. A wolf with no pact is called an Omega.

2. Gerard's senses seem stronger than a normal human. He easily heard Scott hiding at the cemetery during the funeral.

3. Stiles was more stalker than crush in the hospital. I hope the writers dial it back a little.

What Worked

They found something for every main cast member to do, and while their story lines tie into the werewolf world, they don't revolve around Scott. This gives them a chance to give a character a rest every now and then.

I am curious about what's happened to Lydia. She doesn't seem to be a werewolf, but no one knows that yet. Her being taken out of the hospital shows something strange going on.

What Didn't Work

As I said above, the love story. Allison is out of Scott's league. I didn't buy it last season, and I still have a problem with it.

The grandfather demanding vengeance on all wolves, instead of just the one is too cliché. I hope that Argent tries to stand up to his father, or at least takes a stand where Scott is concerned. That is the only way this story line plays for me.
