'Dexter' Season 8 May Conclude Series
Showtime drama to explore complications of Deb, Dexter's relationship
Following the Season 6 finale of "Dexter," Showtime is indicating Season 8 may be the show's last.
In November, the network signed a deal with actor Michael C. Hall and renewed the series for a seventh and eight season, each featuring 12 episodes. But could a Season 9 still be a possibility?
"This is the likely endpoint, but I'm allowing for the possibility that the end can change," said David Nevins, Showtime Entertainment president.
Nevins is pleased with the show's creative direction and is looking forward to seeing how the upcoming story threads unfold.
"I think there's a very clear trajectory now of where they're going over the next two seasons, and I think it's going to help to write with that endgame in mind," he said.
Another story arc Nevins indicated that will significantly impact the series is Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) and Dexter's (Michael C. Hall) relationship.
"I've been pushing to shake up the formula a bit," Nevins explained. "I think there's going to be fundamentally different dynamics now that Deb [is exploring her feelings for Dexter] and has been given a huge reveal at the end of the season. That's going to ricochet through and ... shake up what Dexter goes through so he's not just a lone wolf."
The series follows a serial killer (Hall) who holds a job as a Miami police forensics specialist while quenching his thirst for the kill by hunting criminals who he believes have escaped justice.
Season 6 of "Dexter" set new rating highs -- counting multiple airings, DVR and on-demand viewing -- and pulled in 5.1 million viewers each week.
Hall was nominated for four Emmys and won a 2010 Golden Globe for his performance.
Season 7 is expected premiere in the fall.
"Dexter" also stars C.S. Lee, James Remar, Desmond Harrington, Lauren Vélez, David Zayas, James Remar.
