'Grimm' - Let Your Hair Down
She's a real wild child!
Lauren (Anna Lieberman) and Dustin (Mike Dunay) are hiking in the forest, just minding their own business. Unfortunately for them, Delmar Blake (Drew Barrios) is convinced they must be undercover cops trying to find his illegal marijuana garden. However, before he can kill them, he is attacked and killed by some sort of creature.
While Nick (David Giuntoli) and Hank (Russell Hornsby) are investigating the crime scene, Nick spots what looks like a young blutbad with a long braid of hair. He is unable to catch the creature, however. DNA evidence leads them to an unsolved case involving a missing child by the name of Holly Clark.
The two detectives are accosted by Delmar’s brothers, Micah (Matthew DiBiasio) and Roland (Shawn Law), who are bent on revenge for the death of their brother. Later, the brothers discover the identity of the hikers who witnessed the crime, and they kidnap and interrogate Dustin. Once they are satisfied he did not kill Delmar, they extract the location of the killing from him.
Nick believes that the blutbad he saw was Holly Clark, who has been living in the woods all these years and has become feral. He enlists the aid of Eddie Munroe (Silas Weir Mitchell), and together they track down Holly. She is hostile at first, and it turns out she is badly wounded. They follow her to her makeshift tree house, and after gaining her trust, Eddie watches her while Nick tries to get help.
Hank, in the meantime, is following up on old evidence from the original disappearance, and he realizes that a neighbor, Jimmy Addison (Ted Rooney), has a suspicious alibi. After questioning him, Hank brings him in to the station. Nick calls Hank, tells him he found Holly Clark, and mentions that he noticed a camping stove engraved with the name Addison in her tree house. As he is talking to Hank, he notices the Blake brothers’ pickup truck parked nearby.
The Blake brothers soon find Munroe, but Nick returns in time to save him, with a little help from Holly. She is reunited with her adopted mother, and she identifies Addison in a lineup.
Points Of Interest
Nick continues to show compassion towards the supernatural creatures he is meeting. However, one scene demonstrates that some of the other creatures are becoming aware of his existence, and this could prove to be dangerous for him.
What Worked
This is a mildly entertaining episode, although it doesn’t match the quality of past episodes.
What Didn't Work
This disappointing monster-of-the-week episode adds nothing to the overall story. A number of elements just didn’t work, such as:
--The connection to the Rapunzel fairy tale was a bit of a stretch this time, and it felt contrived.
--I’m guessing that Addison must have abducted Holly, after which she attacked him. However, it’s never quite clear in the episode what he has been charged with.
--It seems that the murder of Delmar Blake ends up going unsolved. Further, it’s not clear whether his two brothers are dead or not, but if they are, these are unsolved as well.
--Why would Delmar Blake think two hikers, who are making out right before he attacks them, are cops?
--Why did Holly actually attack Delmar? If she were truly a feral creature, wouldn’t she just keep to herself, only killing for food? It just doesn’t make sense.
