The Future Is Not Grim For 'Grimm'

PLUS: 'Supernatural' hits series low

"Grimm" may not be pulling in large audiences like "Once Upon a Time" on ABC. But it's not necessarily in trouble, either.

The dark fairy tale procedural from David Greenwalt inched up a little this past week to a 3.4 rating/6 share, according to Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. It's maintained its spot firmly behind "Once" and Fox's "Terra Nova" among network genre shows, but is ranked No. 16 among new shows this past week -- far out of the top 10.

Yet, the series has really been nothing but good news for NBC. It was the network's fifth highest-rated show this week, behind "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Harry's Law" and two episodes of "The Biggest Loser." It's also ahead of NBC's other new shows, including "Up All Night" and the soon-to-be-axed "Prime Suspect."

Sadly, NBC isn't going to provide the show much support. It still has to deal with a poor lead-in from "Chuck," this week having to add 62 percent to its total. And when "Chuck" goes away just after mid-season, it will have to fare with reality programming in the form of "Who Do You Think You Are?" which has never been much of a ratings winner itself.

Even "Terra Nova," despite its large budget and its position of falling a bit short of the hype, could still have a chance to be around when next season starts. It bounced back from a series low on Halloween, and is still doing better than "House," even though it's not beating its timeslot year-over-year.

If there is positive there, there isn't much where it comes to "Supernatural." That series fell below the 1.0 household threshold for the first time, earning just 0.9/1, while averaging a 1.1/2. Even by The CW standards, that's not good, so fans may have to brace themselves for this being the final season of the show.

Fast Nationals usually provide a snapshot of what Americans are watching by pulling numbers from the top urban markets that include both live viewing and same-day timeshifted viewing. A rating point generally represents more than 1.1 million households while the share indicates the percentage of televisions turned on that was tuned to the specific program. These numbers typically shift when final ratings are issued.
