'The Spectre' May Be Coming To The Small Screen
The DC Comics character is in development for Fox Television
Fox is developing a drama series based on supernatural DC Comics character The Spectre, created by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily.
The script will be written by Brandon Camp (“John Doe”) and produced by Bill Gerber (“Gran Torino”).
Deadline reports that the series “centers on a former cop serving time in afterlife limbo who hunts down earthly criminals on behalf of the dead – and mortals soon to be dead if ultimate justice is not served.”
The character debuted in DC’s “More Fun Comics” issue 52, February 1940, as a murdered police officer who comes back from the dead to seek vengeance on his killers. He went on to enjoy five years as a member of the Justice Society of America, as well as solo adventures.
Although a casualty of the decline in popularity of superheroes in the late 1940s, the character was revived in the mid-1960s. His power was vastly increased, and he was re-imagined as a near-omnipotent spirit of vengeance.
In more recent years, several prominent DC characters have taken on the mantle of The Spectre, including Green Lantern Hal Jordan.
DC Entertainment chief creative officer Geoff Johns (“Smallville”) first introduced Camp to the character. This will be Fox’s second DC Comics adaptation since “Human Target,” which was canceled last season.
