'True Blood' – I Wish I Was The Moon

Sookie Stackhouse and good judgment just don't mix

This review may contain spoilers.

"True Blood" continues its trek into its fourth season without yet establishing an overarching point to this season. Season 1 had the serial killer Rene. Season 2 had the Maryann the Maenad. Season 3 had Russell Edgington. Season 4 is now six episodes in and I am struggling to find a coherent narrative point. I am starting to suspect that there might not be one.

Sookie (Anna Paquin) played the role of good big sister to Jason (Ryan Kwanten), who thought he was going to become a were-panther, but didn't. Somehow from here, she ends up having sex in the woods with Eric (Alexander Skarsgard). Jason ends up spending part of the night with Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) and, despite their obvious sudden attraction, nothing happens.

Tommy (Marshall Allman), fresh off of killing his parents in the previous episode, acquires the power to shift into another human form and takes Sam's (Sam Trammell) place for the day. LaFayette (Nelsan Ellis) and Jesus (Kevin Alejandro) have a strange encounter with Jesus' grandfather (Del Zamora). Bill (Stephen Moyer) gets approval to deliver the true death to Eric, but doesn't, because he sees the change in Eric.

None of these stories tie together all that well. This season seems more like a collection of stories as opposed to a unified, focused narrative. While that is to be expected early in a season, "True Blood" is nearing at the halfway point of its season.

It's clear that the witches are supposed to be the big enemy this year, but so far, they have been relatively benign. It's really hard to hate or be terrified of the witches because, up to this point, they've been painted more as victims themselves. Heck, even putting the rotting disease on Pam (Kristin Bauer) has been more humorous than tragic.

"True Blood" has always been a vampire soap opera, and it's hard to criticize a program for not being something other than what it aspires to be. While I couldn't care less about a vast majority of the relationships, some viewers undoubtedly tune in to see who Sookie decides to sleep with. For the viewers who care about this, then this episode delivered what has been coming since Eric first appeared. Personally, I'd prefer a bit more action and conflict.

Points Of Interest

Sam Trammell had to play two versions of his character: the normal Sam and Tommy in Sam's form. He emulated Tommy's walk almost perfectly, including the hunched shoulders and limp.

What Worked

Pam rotting away has been played humorously for the last two episodes. "True Blood" mixes in this type of sick humor about as well as any show in recent memory.

What Didn't Work

Eric having amnesia. Why must every writer in Hollywood resort to this storyline? I would love to see a statistic that shows the percentage of people on television who get amnesia versus occurrences in the real world.

Tara (Rutina Wesley) is less than useless this year. Give her something to do, please. They need to start thinning out the cast.

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

"True Blood" stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell and Alexander Skarsgard. "I Wish I Was the Moon" was written by Raelle Tucker. It was directed by Jeremy Podeswa.

"True Blood" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
