'The Evil Dead' Resurrected As Remake
Sam Raimi kicks off new franchise with Fede Alvarez at the helm
Sam Raimi is moving forward with a remake of his classic film "The Evil Dead."
Teaming with Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell, Raimi will spearhead the project through Ghost House Pictures, which is committed to renewing the franchise and has the film on the fast track.
Fede Alvarez (“Panic Attack”) will direct the remake from a script he penned with Rodo Sayagues. Diablo Cody ("Juno," "Jennifer's Body"), an Academy Award winning screenwriter, is currently polishing the draft.
Stepping into producer roles for the remake, Raimi, Tapert and Campbell issued a joint statement: "We are committed to making this movie and are inspired by the enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the ‘Evil Dead’ series.
"We can't wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available to us thirty years ago as well as Fede bringing a fresh eye to the film’s original elements."
Raimi wrote and directed the original film in 1981. It centered on five friends in a remote cabin who discovered a tapped recording and an ancient book that soon summoned up dormant demons living in the nearby woods.
"The Evil Dead" spawned two popular sequels -- "Evil Dead II" in 1987 and "Army of Darkness" in 1992.
