'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark' Set For Release
Guillermo del Toro is producing the film, with Troy Nixey at the helm
Miramax and FilmDistrict are teaming to release "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" Aug. 12, according to Variety.
Originally slated to hit theaters Jan. 21, the film -- produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Troy Nixey -- has been trapped in limbo since last fall after Disney declined to release it.
"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" is a reimagining of the 1973 film by John Newland. It centers on Sally (Bailee Madison), a young girl who is sent to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes), and who inadvertently awakens a horde of deadly creatures in the old mansion.
Nixey describes the R-rated film as a throwback to scary movies of the '70s and '80s.
"It's not a blood and gore slash-fest movie," Nixey explained in an interview with Rabid Doll last year. "It's a real psychological terror. We really go after this little girl with these monsters. It's really strongly implied scares."
Del Toro ("Hellboy," "Pan's Labyrinth") co-wrote the film with Matthew Robbins ("Mimic," "Dragonslayer") after spending years pondering the remake and chasing the filming rights.
"Miramax has done an inspired job finding the right home for our film that took 15 years to get made," del Toro said in a statement.
