‘Hellboy II’ Sets Up A Third Film
“Hellboy II: The Golden Army†will in be theaters in just a few months. But why stop there? At least that is what director and co-writer Guillermo del Toro is thinking. Del Toro recently told SciFi Wire that he and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola crafted the sequel to lay a foundation for a third film. But don’t worry, if there isn’t a third film, the story still wraps things up.
"The way Mike and I did approach this was, when we were told, 'Think about something, if you want, for a sequel,' we went away and said, 'Let's talk about it,'" del Toro said. "Do we want to continue the story? We did the first one saying, 'That's it. It's a self-concluding story.' And I said, 'Let's come up with an arc that makes sense for us for the second and third movie.'"
While the story arc could continue through a third, it isn’t necessary for the conclusion. "We said, 'This is the story. This is how we end in the third movie,'" del Toro added. "And then I went in and wrote a self-conclusive screenplay [for the second movie]. So if there's never a third one, I'm perfectly at peace."
In the sequel, the B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense) team returns with Hellboy (Ron Perlman), Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and newcomer Johann Kraus (John Alexander & Thomas Kretschmann). The team must battle elves that, led by Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), break a truce and try to take over the Earth.
Or as Mignola told IGN, “I kind of equate it to the whole American Indian situation. The Indians were shoved onto reservations. You had your old, wise Indians who said, ‘You know, this is the way it is. We can't fight anymore. We just have to accept our fate.’ You then have your Geronimo character saying, ‘Or we could just kill the White Man.’ That's kind of the situation we have in the film. We have our elf characters resigning to the way things are and then there's one saying, ‘Or we could take the world back.’ The main difference is - what if the Indians had a nuclear warhead?â€Â
“Hellboy II: The Golden Army†is set for a United States release on July 11, 2008, but for a quick taster, check out the trailer below:
