French directors David Moreau and Xavier Palud are back, and this time they’re aiming to frighten unleash a nightmare upon Hollywood with a remake of the Hong Kong horror “The Eyeâ€Â. But although the central focus of the original was the otherworldly spirits, the directors have claimed that to make the movie a success in the United States, they had to tone down the ghosts.
“The Asian ghost stories are really central to their culture but America does not share that,†Moreau told SFX magazine. “The challenge for us was to make this less of a ghost story. The way we are telling the story is very psychological.â€Â
If you have been put off the film due to the fact that this is only the second movie directed by Moreau and Palud, keep in mind that the movie does have a very heavy Hollywood influence as Tom Cruise is producing “The Eye†and it also happens to star Jessica Alba.
However, where this film differs from what can be considered classic horror movies is the way in which the story is far more refined and takes a different approach to the levels blood and guts that are shown on screen.
“When we got ‘The Eye’ it was much more interesting to us because we knew that there should be the chance to do something that didn’t have much gore or violence. I think that Asian films are popular because they feature less blood. I think American horror movie have, at least lately, been about showing everything.â€Â
