Syfy Gives 'Haven' Another Year

Production on the Stephen King-inspired series continues with a 13-episode order for Season 2

"Haven" will continue for yet another year after Syfy announced it was ordering a 13-episode second season.

The series, based on the Stephen King short "The Colorado Kid," premiered this past summer, averaging 2.6 million viewers, doubling what the time period did the year before, according to a press release from the cable channel. That was enough to convince Syfy to keep the show going, eyeing a return next summer -- although it's not clear if the show will once again air on Fridays now that WWE "Smackdown" is taking over that evening.

Starring Emily Rose from "Jericho" fame, FBI agent Audrey Parker is sent to a small town in Maine only to discover there are secrets abound, not just with special abilities from the towns folk, but also a past that for some reason also includes her. She later leaves the FBI and joins the local police force there with her partner Nathan Wuornos, played by Lucas Bryant, and a friend, Duke Crocker, played by Eric Balfour.

The series was designed to be the first fully fledged international project for Syfy, and brought in the production team that worked on another King project -- "The Dead Zone" -- to bring this version to life. It was a co-production with Entertainment One that helped distribute it globally through Universal Networks International.

The production team includes showrunner Scott Shepherd from "Tru Calling" and "Dead Zone," and executive producers Lloyd Segan, Shawn Piller, John Morayniss, Noreen Halpern, Laszlo Barna, Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn.

The show ends its first season in the United States Friday, but will start being broadcast in nearly 20 other countries soon after.

Besides remaining strong with the ratings (at least through mid-September), "Haven" also kept a good chunk of its "Eureka" lead-in, like 82 percent of it.

Syfy has given greenlights to a number of series so far, including "Warehouse 13" and "Eureka." However, other shows like "Stargate: Universe" -- which just started its second season earlier this month -- and "Caprica" are still waiting on renewal or cancellation orders, decisions expected to be made before the end of the year, if not by the end of November.
