'Insidious' Scares Up Theatrical Release
'Saw' director James Wan's ghost story lands distribution deal
James Wan's haunted house film "Insidious" has landed a distribution deal following its recent debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group acquired the North American distribution rights of "Insidious" in a seven-figure deal that guarantees a theatrical release, according to Deadline.
Wan ("Saw," "Dead Silence") directed the film based on a script by "Saw" writer Leigh Whannell.
"Insidious" stars Rose Byrne ("Damages") and Patrick Wilson ("Watchmen") as a couple who take possession of an old house and attempt to come to terms with their son's recent tragedy, which soon includes a bizarre series of supernatural events as vengeful spirits run amok.
"Paranormal Activity" director Oren Peli will produce, along with Jason Blum and Steven Schneider. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones will executive produce.
Barbara Hershey ("Chicago Hope") and Lin Shaye ("2001 Maniacs") also star.
