'Last Exorcism' Outlasts 'Takers' ... For Now
Both films separated by just $300,000 at the box office
"The Last Exorcism" wants to be the No. 1 movie at the box office, but it may have to wait until Monday to find out if it finished there.
Right now, however, the mock documentary directed by Daniel Stamm, has a slim $300,000 lead over "Takers," the Hayden Christensen film that was directed by John Luessenhopp. Through Sunday, "Last Exorcism" has pulled in $21.3 million, compared to $21 million from "Takers." Both films are finishing well above expectations, according to CNN, which has led some to believe both studios that distributed the films may be overstating numbers, and could revise down on Monday.
But a $21.3 million haul isn't too shabby for a film that Lionsgate paid under $3 million to make and produce. Anything from opening night on was profit for the studio (and anyone collecting residuals), thus Lionsgate should be happy with the opening, even if it failed to meet the opening weekend numbers of similar films in recent years like "Paranormal Activity" and "The Exorcism of Emily Rose."
"Last Exorcism" actually has pulled in halfway decent reviews from critics, scoring a 71 percent on RottenTomatoes.com. It's no "Blair Witch Project," the site says, but it certainly is entertaining. "Takers," on the other hand, failed miserably with critics, scoring just a 28 percent, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
Other movies making the top 10 this weekend included "The Expendables" with a $9.5 million haul for third place and a total of $82 million, "Eat Pray Love" at $7 million for $60.7 million overall, "The Other Guys" getting another $6.6 million to grow to $99.3 million, "Vampires Suck" grabbing $5.3 million for a $27.9 million total, "Inception" dreaming up $5.1 million for $270.7 million total, "Nanny McPhee Returns" at $4.7 million for a $17 million total, "The Switch" earning $4.65 million for a $16.4 million total, and "Pirahna 3D" earning $4.3 million for $18.2 million total.
