The Gates - Jurisdiction
It sucks to be a succubus!
At first glance, this episode seemed less eventful than in previous weeks, but it contained some pivotal events.
Sheriff Nick Monohan (Frank Grillo) must solve another murder in The Gates, and it looks like the culprit was a vampire. His first suspects are Dylan Radcliffe (Luke Mably) and his wife (Rhona Mitra). Of course, the other obvious choice is Christian Harper (Paul Blackthorne), but the answer turns out to be far more complicated.
In the process of his investigation, Monohan discovers the identity of some of the other vampires in the community. In addition, he is able to learn more about their rules, and actually witnesses an example of their form of justice. This will undoubtedly prove to be a turning point for this character, as he can finally understand the extent of the powers he is dealing with.
Last week, at the end of the episode Repercussions, we saw Gates developer Frank Buckley (Brett Cullen) watching video surveillance footage of Dylan saving Nicks life by killing Teresa (Shannon Lucio). At the end of this episode, he reveals to Nick and Dylan that he is in possession of the footage, because he is aware that Nick is thinking of leaving.
Meanwhile, Andie Bates (Skyler Samuels), the budding succubus, believes she can handle her powers without the medicine that Peg Mueller (Victoria Gabrielle Platt) has prescribed for her. However, when she momentarily loses control again while kissing Charlie Monohan (Travis Caldwell), she realizes the error of her ways.
Devon (Chandra West) is definitely up to something, but its still very mysterious. It has something to do with her new anti-aging face peel, which she administers to many of the neighborhood women during a fund-raising event. Im interested to learn what she is planning to do.
What Worked
The murder mystery was an excellent catalyst for Nick to learn more about the vampire group, as well as bond a bit more with Dylan. The fact that the murderer turned out to be human was a nice twist.
The Frank Buckley blackmail footage is also a brilliant move on the part of the writers. No ordinary human would want to stay in The Gates once they found out a group of vampires lived there, but now Nick is forced to stay if he wants to keep his family safe. This will also create more of a bond between him and Dylan.
The Claire/Dylan/Christian love triangle is turning out to be very interesting now that its clear that Dylan has no idea about Christians feelings for Claire.
This show continues to get more interesting each week. It hasnt quite achieved must see status for me yet, but the preview for next week looked very interesting.
What Didnt Work
The cat-fighting housewives plot was weak. Admittedly, it did provide the catalyst for Devons machinations, but I think it was a bit overdone. I think this show needs to get as far away from the Desperate Housewives comparisons as possible.
Andie Batesstruggle with taking her anti-succubus medicine was tied up a bit too neatly, in my opinion. There wont really be any more drama, not to mention horror, to this story line if she dutifully takes her medicine from now on.
