Producer Discusses 'Elm Street' Reboot
Platinum Dunes' take on Wes Craven's 1984 film set to hit theaters April 30
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" producer Brad Fuller insists Platinum Dunes is deeply invested in crafting a quality reboot of Wes Craven's classic 1984 horror film.
In fact, the studio is "sweating it out" probably more than any of their other films, according to Fuller in a recent interview with Dread Central.
"We made it our mission to do everything in our power to deliver with 'Nightmare on Elm Street,' he said. Honestly, its hard remaking films that people feel so strongly about. What weve come to realize is that you just can never replace those feelings you have the first time you see the original 'Nightmare' or the original 'Friday the 13th.'
"Platinum Dunes is not trying to replace those memories for anyone because we have them, too, as fans.
But Fuller points to the long-running horror remake trend spurred by classic titles like "Dracula," "The Mummy" and "The Wolf Man."
"Were just a new generation of people remaking films, and we are the ones carrying the torch this time around, he explained.
However, blending elements both new and old in the film was an important concern for the studio.
"There are so many landmark moments in the first one that we needed to make sure we keep in ours but still have enough in there that will keep the audience guessing, he said.
"Nightmare On Elm Street" tells the tale of killer Fred Krueger as he stalks a group of suburban teenagers after their parent's vigilante justice transforms him into an unstoppable entity. As a dream-stalking murderer, he leaves no chance of escape for his prey.
First-time director Samuel Bayer is helming the film, which is based on a script by Eric Heisserer and Wesley Strick ("Wolf," "Cape Fear").
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" hits theaters April 30, and stars Kyle Gallner (Jennifer's Body"), Rooney Mara (Urband Legends: Bloody Mary"), Thomas Dekker ("Laid To Rest", "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles"), Kellan Lutz ("The Twilight Saga: New Moon), Katie Cassidy ("Taken," "Supernatural") and Clancy Brown ("Carnivà le," "The Burrowers").
