Extended Version Of 'Nightbreed' Still Possible
Your help is needed to demonstrate the size and commitment of the film's audience; see how you can support a director's cut of Clive Barker's 1990 film.
An extended version of Clive Barker's 1990 film "Nightbreed" may still be possible, but fan support for the project is needed.
Set to debut at the HorrorHound Weekend convention in Indianapolis Saturday, the extended workprint runs 44 minutes longer than the theatrical release.
20th Century Fox originally felt Barker's workprint was too long and too explicit for an R-rated release. The excised footage featured graphic gore, disturbing images in Midian and additional character development.
Reportedly, an alternate version of the film also exists, featuring a 159 minute cut.
Following an aggressive fan petition, Morgan Creek began exploring the possibility of a director's cut. However, the studio now feels reservations about moving forward.
"After discussing the current home entertainment market in 'the horror genre' with Warner Bros., Morgan Creek have decided to take 'a pause' before deciding to move forward with the DVD release we're all calling for," said a post on CliveBarker.info. "They've adopted a 'not now' position, telling us that, in their opinion, the current market will not support the required investment in reassembling the master reels to produce a director's cut of the movie.
"We are therefore asking for your continued help in showing the size and commitment of 'Nightbreed's' audience. ... We're working with Clive on planning our next series of conversations with Morgan Creek -- your support is what caught the studio's attention in the first place, so please let's keep it going."
According to CliveBarker.info, anyone wishing to help Barker's version of "Nightbreed" become a reality should voice their support in forums and blogs, and follow the campaign's Twitter page at @philandsarah. You can also send an email to philandsarah@clivebarker.info.
Based on the novel "Cabal," "Nightbreed" is the tale of a secret community of ancient creatures who attempt to avoid the human world and a serial killer with the help of a young man with a special destiny. It was written and directed by Barker, and stars Craig Sheffer ("One Tree Hill"), Anne Bobby, David Cronenberg, Charles Haid ("Hill Street Blues") and Doug Bradley ("Hellraiser").
