'Vampire Diaries,' 'Supernatural' Receive Early Renewals

Genre shows are among five series to be picked up for 2010-11 season

It looks like things that go bump in the night will continue to do so as The CW has given early renewals to five of its shows, including "The Vampire Diaries" and "Supernatural."

Since it debuted in September, "The Vampire Diaries" has become The CW's No. 1 series and snagged a larger audience than any other season premiere in the history of the network (excluding its predecessors, UPN and The WB) with a grand total of 5.7 million viewers. In addition to pulling in an incredibly strong opening, the series can also boast a massive turnaround for Thursday nights ... a time that has traditionally been held by "Smallville."

The comic book series was curiously absent from the renewals, however. The show has struggled with the ratings this season since migrating to Friday nights. Recent performance, including a double episode event, has given the show a slight boost, and CW President Dawn Ostroff has previously confirmed that a 10th season is not out of the question for the long-running series.

It is likely more renewals could come later, especially since The CW billed these pickups as "early."

Also earning a renewal is "Supernatural," a show that has gone from strength to strength over the last few seasons. Previously, the paranormal series was always considered a bubble show (meaning that the decision for a renewal could typically go either way), but last season the show did a complete turnaround and delivered increased ratings and received substantial critical praise.

Partnered with "The Vampire Diaries," "Supernatural" has continued to do well throughout its current fifth season and has seen further ratings improvements with key demographics - no small feat for a five-year-old series. News of the pickup has caused some concern within the show's very loyal fanbase as series creator Eric Kripke has already spoken out on the five-year arc of the series and his plans to bring that to a conclusion at the end of the season.

So, with the series now earning a pick-up does that mean he'll be saying goodbye to the series? Well, according to columnist Maureen Ryan at the Chicago Tribune, a CW representative confirmed that Kripke will definitely be back.

Teen drama's "90210" and "Gossip Girl" also were given early renewals, as has the reality series "America's Next Top Model."

"Vampire Diaries" and "Supernatural" both air Thursdays beginning at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
