Eli Roth Documents 'The Last Exorcism'
'Hostel' helmer navigates a daunting workload of genre projects
Lionsgate will distribute "The Last Exorcism," a film produced by "Hostel" helmer Eli Roth, who is simultaneously navigating a daunting workload of genre projects.
Originally titled "Cotton," the shaky-cam-style film was directed by Daniel Stamm ("A Necessary Death"), and was also produced by Strike Entertainment and StudioCanal.
It stars Patrick Fabian ("Big Love," "Veronica Mars") as a minister who authorizes a documentary crew to film his final exorcism. "Mail Order Wife" writing duo Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland scripted.
Shopping the film to buyers last month, producers Eric Newman, Marc Abraham, Tom Bliss and Roth received offers from nearly every major and mini-major studio. In the end, Lionsgate's focus on horror entertainment won out.
"It's always great to work with our friend Eli, who has played a key role in establishing Lionsgate in the vanguard of the horror genre," said Jason Constantine, Lionsgate's president of acquisitions and co-productions. "'The Last Exorcism' feels as close to a real exorcism as anyone would ever want to get -- audiences are going to find this movie scary as, well, hell."
Meanwhile, Roth is balancing a demanding schedule, including his sci-fi horror project "Endangered Species," "The Other Woman," "The Funhouse," "The Man with the Iron Fist," "Invasion" and his "Grindhouse" feature-length version of the "Thanksgiving" faux trailer.
"Well, I wanna do 'Endangered Species' first before I do 'Thanksgiving,'" Roth said in an interview with Bloody Disgusting. "But you cant do anything without a script, and thats the first step. Ive learned that I cant write multiple things at once, even though I try to. So my goal now is just to focus on getting the script for 'Endangered' done, and then getting the 'Thanksgiving' script done."
As for the psychological thriller "The Other Woman," Strike Entertainment and Roth will again team with writers Botko and Gurland.
Set to shoot in late spring, "The Other Woman" is about a scorned mistress who makes a film for her ex-lover. Roth said it will involve "the worst nightmares of those who have had extramarital affairs, and the sickest fantasies of those who have been scorned."
"The Last Exorcism" is set to premiere next month at the South by Southwest Conferences and Festivals in Austin, Texas; the domestic release date has yet to be set.
