Shawn Ashmore Hints At 'Mother's Day'
'Frozen' actor stars in remake of Charles Kaufman's 1980 film
While promoting his latest film "Frozen," actor Shawn Ashmore recently talked about remaking the 1980 film "Mother's Day."
Darren Lynn Bousman ("Repo! The Genetic Opera," "Saw II-IV") is directing the remake, and is looking to mold a very different film than the original Troma Entertainment flick by Charles Kaufman.
Scripted by Scott Milam, the film follows three outlaw brothers who head home only to discover that their mother lost the house in a foreclosure and now intends to teach the house's new owners a deadly lesson.
"'Mother's Day' is going to be a really dark, psychological thriller," Ashmore said in an interview with Shock Till You Drop. "Its definitely bloody and its definitely gory, but I wouldnt call it just a 'horror' movie.
"In our movie, the Koffin brothers have robbed a bank and in the midst of robbing the bank, one of the brothers gets shot, so they go home to their mothers house to lay low and figure out what to do. And they come bursting into their old childhood home and realize that everythings different. They realize that their mother had lost the house without telling them, and they stumble upon a birthday party with these 10 yuppie types partying in the basement. So they hold them all hostage and my character George is a doctor, so hes given the task of keeping the brother alive or theyre going to kill everyone in the house. It's a really intense movie."
Ashmore has only seen bits and pieces of the original "Mother's Day," but that wasn't a problem -- he was free to do his own thing.
"Theres definitely some references [to the original film], but it's based on the idea of the original with this psychopath family of crazy brothers with their mother leading the charge," he explained.
