Diablo Cody Talks The Undead

Screenwriter to produce 'Breathers: A Zombie's Lament,' reflects on 'Jennifer's Body'

Diablo Cody recently discussed her upcoming horror-comedy "Breathers: A Zombie's Lament," and reflected on the lackluster reception to her film "Jennifer's Body."

Written by Geoff LaTulippe ("Going the Distance"), "Breathers" will be produced by Cody ("Juno"). It is based on a novel by S.G. Browne, involving a reanimated car-crash victim as he attempts to navigate his new life as a zombie by attending support groups and pursuing a relationship.

We have a script and I am thrilled with it and hope we can go into production with it soon, Cody said in an interview with If Magazine. Its a zombie love story. Zombies are so hot now, but I like to think its about the personal side of being a zombie and being ostracized.

Cody is also optimistic that her previous horror entry "Jennifer's Body," which she wrote, will find an audience on DVD despite its box office woes.

I want to believe deep down inside that movie will find its audience, she said. At the same time, many of us knew that it wasnt going to connect which is a terrible thing to say. As much as I love that movie, and Im incredibly proud of that movie and I will love it forever, I feel its very unusual and I dont think its super accessible in a lot of ways.

"I dont think it was a typical, mass appeal popcorn horror movie. I think it was more like an art film. I know some people would laugh at that.

She also points out that the marketing of the film failed to target teenage girls.

The marketing was a little messed up, Cody said. It was marketed mostly to boys and I think we could have had a large female audience that was ignored. I have faith. Im on Twitter and I get a lot of feedback from people all day. The DVD came out and Ive heard from an avalanche of people saying I didnt think I would like this movie, and Ive watched the DVD five times. Now Im thinking, you missed it the first time around and youre getting your opportunity to enjoy it.
