'Zombieland' Poised For 3D Sequel
Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg in talks to continue their war on the dead
Sony Pictures is looking to launch a 3D sequel to "Zombieland."
With a proven track record, 3D films are steadily becoming a studio staple for maximizing profits, giving many recent films -- such as Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" -- a significant boost.
"Everyone had fun watching (the first) 'Zombieland'; making it a more visceral experience can only make it better," said the film's producer Gavin Polone. "I don't think you want to see 'Ordinary People' in 3-D. But 'Zombieland' is clearly one movie that will benefit from (the technique)."
Additionally, the first 3D TVs are set to hit the market in the spring, which will make 3D films even more desirable, according to Polone.
Sony has closed deals with Polone and director Ruben Fleischer to return for the sequel, with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returning to pen the screenplay.
Stars Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg are currently in talks to reprise their roles as a pair of post-apocalyptic survivors.
"Zombieland" cost $24 million and has earned $85.2 million worldwide to date; however, it has only opened in a few territories overseas.
