Dexter- Blinded by the Light

Trinity strikes again as Dexter stalks a vandal

By Melissa Girimonte

This review may contain spoilers.

Dexter is stranded in suburbia when Rita takes away his keys following his car wreck. Unable to party it up with his Dark Passenger, Dexter is forced to attend a neighborhood watch meeting about a vandal on the loose. After the meeting, Dexter and Rita discover the gate at the Morgan home is spray painted, and he decides to spend his free time finding the identity of the vandal and confronting them.

Trinity has definitely found his next victim, a wife and mother of two, and takes to an abandoned warehouse where he forces her to jump to her death. When Miami Metro is called in, it appears to be a suicide, but Deb thinks otherwise due to Lundys influence that Trinity is in fact at work. Deb faces resistance from Laguerta and her colleagues as she tries to prove this was a murder and not a suicide, and gets Masuka to help prove her point by trying to recreate the crime scene. Dexter confirms Lundys speculation that this is in fact another of Trinitys victims, and for a moment, you see Dexters respect and admiration for Trinity.

It turns out Lundy is still in love with Deb, and tells her that hes happy following the trail of the Trinity Killer that led him to Miami so he could see her again. Debs relationship with Anton seems to be on unsteady ground, and this revelation really gets Deb thinking if shes with the right man.

Back in suburban hell, Dexter discovers that the vandal is a down on his luck neighbor, and not that neighbor's son as originally suspected. Once Dexter scares some sense into the vandal, he heads home and promptly smashes a flood light that could be problematic once Dexters back in his regular routine. He thinks hes in the clear, but discovers that Rita witnessed his destructive act.

With all of the obstacles in Dexters way this season, by the end of this episode, he has another -- Ritas suspicion and keeping a closer eye on his every move. Will Dexter be able to continue along the same path with Rita keeping tabs on him?

What Worked

The manner in which Trinity took his next victims life was undeniably disturbing. You could really see her desperation mount, and it was tragic to see her stop fighting to stay alive when Trinity threatened her family. There have been many barbaric, grotesque deaths on Dexter over the years, but this is the one that I cant stop thinking about.

What Didnt Work

Dexter has always been a very deliberate character. Everything he does, no matter how twisted, makes sense in some strange way. Him running around his neighborhood in a mask trying to scare a vandal just didnt add up for me.

Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

Dexter stars Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, Jennifer Carpenter, Lauren Vélez, David Zayas, Keith Carradine, CS Lee, James Remar and John Lithgow. Blinded by the Light was written by Scott Buck and directed by Marcos Siega. Dexter airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.
